Teaching in Honors

The UHP is committed to offering a distinctive honors curriculum designed to provide students with a more intimate learning environment within a larger university community. 

Honors Faculty are:

  • Engaged scholars, artists, practitioners contributing to their fields of knowledge
  • Eager to engage undergraduate students in research and independent thinking
  • Passionate about teaching and pedagogy
  • Interested in seeking connections, globally and across multiple disciplines

SIUC Faculty teach in the Honors Program in several ways.

Honors Teaching Fellows:  Twice a year, the University Honors Program issues a call for honors course proposals (November deadline for Fall courses, and March deadline for Spring courses). The proposals are reviewed by the Honors Advisory Council comprised of faculty representatives from each college.The Call for proposals for Spring 2020 will be out in the first week of February. For Spring 2020, we are inviting course proposals in two categories. Faculty may propose a topic of their choice or gear it towards the  Honors Theme for Fall 2019-Spring 2020 year: SurvivalCall for proposals for Spring 2020.

Faculty Advisor for Honors Contract: Students may seek to earn Honors credit in any course with consent of the Faculty member as well as the Honors Director.  Please view the Honors Contract form for more details.

Independent Studies and Thesis:  Faculty direct Independent Studies (UHON 399) or UHON 499 Thesis/Project

Teaching a Departmental Honors Recognized course: Departments initiate the process for adding an H section for outstanding students to their existing courses.  Please contact for more on this.  Here is our current list of Recognized courses


Contract Guidelines

Students may contract for honors credit for any course with consent of the instructor and the director of the UHP. View the Honors Contract form for more details.
