Sarah Lukavsky – President

I am a senior majoring in zoology with a minor in environmental studies. I plan to attend graduate school to pursue a doctorate in evolutionary ecology after my time here at SIU. Here on campus, I am also the president of Zeta Theta Omega, the professional zoology fraternity, and Diversify STEM. I am also an active member in The Wildlife Society and Saluki Reefers. Academically, I am a SUPERB Scholar, McNair Scholar, and REACH grant recipient. I conduct research on pollination and phylogenetics in a plant ecology lab. In my free time, I love to volunteer with Green Earth, hike, read, and spend as much time as possible looking for birds. I am honored to be the president of Honors Assembly and look forward to an amazing year!

Katrina Stanley – VP of Communications

Hello! My name is Katrina and I am a junior majoring in English with a pre-professional writing specialization. I hope to work in the publishing industry after graduation. Aside from Honors Assembly, I am also involved in activities at the Wesley Foundation. I am excited for the semester and what's to come for Honors Assembly. I plan to do my best in serving as the Vice President of Communications this year. 

Elisa (Elly) Lopez – VP of Social Media and Outreach

I am a third-year student pursuing a double major in Marketing and Supply Chain Management, complemented by a minor in Spanish. After completing my undergraduate at SIU in December 2024, I aspire to further my academic journey by earning a master's degree in marketing. During my time here in Carbondale, my goal is to make a positive impact on the Southern Illinois region, while also assisting incoming and current honors students in reaching their full potential. I am actively involved in various organizations, two of which include the Honors Program and Honors Assembly. I also serve as the Vice President of Events for the Business Leadership Council; additionally, I am a member of the American Marketing Association and the Latin/x Council. Collaborating with these amazing individuals in the Honors Assembly, I am excited to organize events and connect with all you honor students.

Natalie Eves – Treasurer

I am a freshman majoring in anthropology. I am part of the anthropology club. I also plan to become more involved with other clubs and organizations here on campus. I love to read, go hiking, and talk about history. I am so excited to be your honors treasurer. I can’t wait to see what events and achievements this year will bring us.

Anna Rodgers - VP of Event Planning and Promotion

I am a second year Social Work major with minors in Psychology and Nutrition.  I have lived in Southern Illinois for the majority of my life.  After graduating from SIU I hope to become a School Social Worker.  In addition to the Honors Assembly, on-campus I am Outreach Coordinator for the Social Work Student Alliance. On-campus, I am an assistant Girl Scout Leader.  In my free time, I like to crochet, sew, tap dance and volunteer within my community.  I am looking forward to being more involved in the Honors Program and to gaining more skills and experiences.

Carmen Wilder – VP of Diversity and Inclusion

I am a senior from Belleville, Illinois majoring in psychology and minoring in environmental studies.  Throughout my time at SIU, I have played clarinet in the Marching Salukis and have given campus tours as a Saluki Ambassador.  I also work as a Campus Visit Representative in Undergraduate Admissions.  In my free time, I love to hike, bike, crochet, and play pickleball (I am a self-proclaimed Pickle Pro!)  I have really enjoyed serving the Southern Illinois community through the University Honors Program and Chancellor's Scholars Program.  It is an honor to be an officer on the Honors Assembly and I am excited to "Learn. Lead. Serve." this year!

Brenda Sanders – Advisor

I am passionate about my work as a mentor with the University Honors Program and enjoy guiding my mentees towards higher achievements and enriching experiences at SIUC. I am a two-degree alum from SIUC―a B.S. in University Studies with minors in Workforce Education and Speech Communication and a M.S. in Workforce Education and Development, specializing in College Student Leadership. An Honors student, my awards included an Undergraduate Research/Creative Activity Award, a Graduate Fellowship Certificate of Achievement, a REACH and Undergraduate Assistantship Award, and  a McNair Scholar. I am delighted to serve as the advisor of the Honors Assembly!

Grace DuRocher – President

I am honored to serve as the President of the UHP’s Honors Assembly this semester. I am a junior from Springfield, Illinois studying Chemistry and am on the Pre-Med track. I have hopes of attending medical school after my time here at SIU and to go on to serve my community as a physician. Here on campus, I also play on the Women’s Club Volleyball, am a member of the Pre-Health Professions Association, and work in a chemistry research lab on campus. Off campus, I work at Carbondale Memorial Hospital as a Lab Phlebotomist. I truly enjoy working in a team, whether it be on the court, in the lab, or in the hospital. I look forward to building my leadership and teamwork skills this semester working alongside these incredible women in the Honors Assembly this semester.

Emma Wallestad – VP of Event Planning and Promotion

I am a Junior majoring in Dental Hygiene, and I'm planning on attending dental school after graduating from SIU. On-campus, I am also involved with being a co-president for the SIU Women's Volleyball Club, a member of the Pre-Health Professions Association, and collaborating on a grant. Off-campus, I'm gaining lots of experience by working off-campus as a dental assistant at a local practice in Carbondale. In my free time I enjoy hanging out with my friends, hiking, working out, art, and serving my community. I'm striving to gain further professional and leadership skills within the Honors Assembly, along with more opportunities for my future!

Julia Beckner – VP of Cultural Experience and Diversity

I am a second year majoring in Zoology on a Wildlife Biology track and am also minoring in art. In addition to being a member of the honors assembly I am the vice president of Zeta Theta Omega co-ed professional fraternity and a part of the leadership team at The Wesley Foundation. I am excited to get to know more of you and work alongside you during my time here at SIU. In my free time I love to volunteer, be active, cook, and find new ways to be creative. I hope to be the best servant leader I can be and to carry out our "Learn. Lead. Serve." motto to the best of my ability.

Arianna Goss – Vice President of Communications

I look forward to serving the Honors program during this upcoming year. I am from Sainte Marie, IL and I study healthcare management with minors in long-term care and health informatics. I am involved with the Chancellor’s Scholars Program, REACH program, Undergraduate Student Government, Student Healthcare Management Association, Honors Pre-Law Scholars program, and Delta Zeta Sorority. This upcoming year will hopefully give us a taste of normalcy back and I look forward to serving SIU and Honors students.

Katie Hosick – VP of Operations

I am a Senior studying Anthropology with minors in Forensic Science and American Sign Language. My pronouns are She/They and I am a member of the LGBTQ+ community. I am very honored and excited to serve as the Vice President of Operations for the University Honors Assembly. The Honors program provides students with an abundant amount of opportunities and I am very happy to help with that! I plan to graduate May 2022 and pursue a career in Forensic Anthropology, but I am open to all opportunities including Human Osteology or Biological Anthropology. My dream job is to work at the National History Museum at the Smithsonian. Volunteering is a big part of my time at SIU and of the Honors Program. As a member of the RSO, Saluki Service Dawgs, I volunteer training service dogs so that they may assist their human partner when they are ready! I hope to bring more inclusivity to the Honors Program and our campus and to lead by example, following the University Honors Program’s motto of "Learn. Lead. Serve."

Martiece Arrington, President

I am a Saluki, a University Honors Student, a Communication Studies Major, a Golden Key Honors Member, a McNairs Scholar, and proud to be the 2020-2021 President of the University Honors Program’s Honors Assembly. As the President of the Honors Assembly, I would like to welcome back our returning family and welcome in our new family members on behalf of the University Honors Program. Here at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, we pride ourselves as fighting Salukis. Although our reality has changed due to an unprecedented pandemic, our focus remains the same this upcoming academic year—continuing to strive towards success while representing the colors maroon and black.

Megan Dunker, Vice President of Operations

It is an honor to serve as the Vice President of Operations for the University Honors Assembly. I am a junior from Mackinaw, Illinois studying Interpersonal Communication and Pre-Professional English. I plan to graduate in December of 2021 and am planning my next professional steps. Currently, I work as a Team Lead in the New Student Programs office as well as a Peer Tutor at SIU’s Writing Center. I am also a member of Alpha Gamma Delta International Fraternity and the National Millennial and Gen Z Community. I love to read, volunteer, and play Animal Crossing in my free time. Through my work in the University Honors Assembly, I hope to understand the nature of leadership and integrity as modeled by some of the great leaders in history.

Maggie-Margaret Schlotter, Vice President of Cultural Experience & Diversity

The University Honors Program has provided me with the encouragement to be more involved in campus activities and has helped me find organizations that align with my values and interests. I have been involved in the Psi Chi/Psychology Student Association, first as a member and later as the Public Service Coordinator on the Executive Board, bringing volunteer opportunities, facilitating recruitment, and organize meetings and events for our members. In addition, I pursue my commitment to serve as an ally and tackle systemic racism through working as Vice President (this semester) of the Hispanic Student Council. I would love the opportunity to grow further as a leader and serve as a mentor to other students. I hope to bring more inclusivity to the program and campus through collaborating with my other student organizations as I promote the University Honors culture of Learn. Lead. Serve.

Leah Sutton, Director of Communications

I am a third generation Saluki from Highland, Illinois. Currently, I am a Senior in Photography and am minoring in Art History. I have served as President of Photogenesis and exhibited my work at the Cedarhurst Center for the Arts Gallery, Mt. Vernon, IL as well as in LUX Magazine. In addition to co-curricular, I am the Photo Editor with the Daily Egyptian and an Orientation Leader with New Student Programs. I am currently applying to Northwestern University for a Master’s of Science in Journalism specialization in Magazine. My favorite part of being a saluki is having great professors, who go above and beyond in helping students to reach their current and future goals. Lana Sawar, Academic Chair

This is my third year here at SIU. I study microbiology and intend to go to medical school when I graduate. In my free time, I enjoy reading, playing basketball, and hiking. I strive to make someone laugh or smile every day. I am dedicated to volunteering in the community and am looking forward to growing my leadership skills in the University Honors Assembly. We will be putting on an Honors Research Symposium in Spring 2021 and taking Honors students with their research presentations to a regional Honors Conference in Spring 2021. Servant leadership is the way I intend to help underprivileged population through my commitment to healthcare on the local and global level.

Grace Durocher, Vice President of Event Planning & Promotion

I am a sophomore majoring in Biochemistry and on the Pre-Med track. I hope to become an Anesthesiologist one day. Both of my parents are SIU alumni! On campus, I like to be involved in service and leadership. In addition to the Honors Program and Honors Assembly, I am involved in Women’s Club Volleyball, the Pre-Health Professions Association Student Organization, and serve as a Saluki Science Ambassador. I work on campus in a bio-chem research lab, which is giving me valuable hands-on experience.

Maryam Makhdoom, Chair of Honors Symposium

I am in my fourth year of studies here at SIUC. I study public health and look forward to studying medicine upon graduating. I am particularly interested in the emerging interdisciplinary fields of global health diplomacy and am striving to educate myself on the related fields and topic. In my free time, I enjoy reading, painting, and cooking. I believe a strong sense of creativity and a life-long love for learning will help fuel my personal and professional growth. I have always been dedicated to supporting and serving my community and hope to become a better servant leader through my work with the University Honors Assembly. Chairing the Honors Research Symposium this coming Spring 2021 will require organization and outreach. This work is already underway!
